Pet Cremation and Burial

Deciding whether to choose pet cremation or burial is a deeply personal decision. Whether or not it is right for you, your family, and your pet will depend on many factors. Among these factors are your religious beliefs, your financial situation, your access to resources, and what you are comfortable with.

Dog Paw Infection

You know dog paw infections are quite common if you are used to having one. Our four-legged friends walk all day long on a different type of surfaces and often cut their paw or get thorns or debris deposited in the paw and skin folds.

One of the most common problems we see in veterinary medicine is gastrointestinal (GI) upset/diarrhea. Depending on your cat’s lifestyle, you may or may not be readily aware of the details of her bathroom habits. In addition, cats are very fastidious about grooming so the tell-tale (or tell-tail) signs of diarrhea may be missed—especially in the early stages. For this reason, routine veterinary visits are important.

Making the Decision

While some pets die of old age in the comfort of their own home, many others become seriously ill, get injured in some way or experience a significantly diminished quality of life as they grow very old. In these situations, it may be necessary for you to consider having your pet euthanized in order to spare it from pain and suffering. Here are some suggestions for dealing with this difficult decision, as well as some information about the euthanasia procedure itself

Your Pet's Medications

Always tell your veterinarian the medications, including any over-the-counter medications and supplements (including vitamins and any holistic or homeopathic products), that you are giving your pet. Write down how often, how much, and how you give them and share this list with your veterinarian.

Eye Problems in Cats

Healthy cat’s eyes should appear clear and bright. The pupils should be the same size and the area around the eyeball should be white. The eyelid lining should be pink, not red or white.

With vaccination commonly recommended annually, most pet owners are accustomed to taking their pets to the vet for "yearly shots." It seems such a commonplace part of routine pet care that many people do not think about what is actually occurring within their pet's body. In fact, immunization represents stimulation of the immune system, an inherently inflammatory process.

Have all material safety data sheets or product safety data sheets for cleaning and disinfection materials available. Follow instructions for proper mixing, disposal, and PPE (e.g., gloves, eye protection). As able, ensure the area is well ventilated.

In-House vs. Reference Lab Testing

One of the major progressions in veterinary medicine is the ability to perform more specific and accurate laboratory testing.  This is of utmost importance when your pet is ill, but is also needed for routine wellness screenings, pre-anesthetic evaluations, and monitoring response to therapy.

Vaccination Guidelines for Cats

The UC Davis veterinary hospital vaccination guidelines below have been based on published studies and recommendations made by task forces (including the AAFP/AFM Advisory Panel on Feline Vaccines, AAHA Canine Vaccine Task Force, and World Small Animal Veterinary Association), which include representatives from academia, private practices, governmental regulatory bodies, and industry.
